OLD WIVES TALE how to tell who you will marry

This is an old wives tale born in the back hills of Kentucky as far as can be told. The process must be done exactly as told and you will learn the initials of the person that you will marry. Not necessarily the first person, however, the initials represent the one that you will marry and stay with “until death you do part”. To learn the initials you will need:


2 people – (the one that desires the initials and another to help)
A King James version Bible
A pair of scissors
A Kleenex or soft cloth


Open the scissors partial and then wrap with the tissue. Place the scissors in the King James Bible at the beginning of the Book of Ruth. Each person then places their little finger in the each handle of the scissors, just using the tips of the little finger. The helper then states the first letter of the alphabet “A”. The person wishing to know whom she will marry recites“And Ruth said, Retreat me not to leave thee, or return from following after thee. Whither thou goest, I will go. Whiter thou lodgest, I will lodge. Thy people shall be my people and thy God my God.” Repeat this for each letter of the alphabet. When the helper says the first initial and the other one begins to repeat the quote, the scissors will fall from both fingers. This will be the first initial.

Repeat to find the last letter of the last name. Not too many people remember these initials throughout their lives to learn if this old wives tale is true, but there are quite a few that enjoy watching the scissors spin right off the fingers of the participants.

I have a friend in Texas who has been married six times. He must have cramps in his fingers from dropping the scissors.
