Not a Blaze of Glory

The above picture is the Rosewood Soo Line Depot being destroyed by fire. The edge of the picture said 1962. Let's talk about fires today.

In a stoic mental state, what would you take out besides yourself and family members? Do you have a smoke detector? Have you tested it lately? Do you have an escape plan? Do you know anyone that has lost everything in a fire?

Just because you have a hydrant doesn't mean your house is going to be saved. But what about families in the country? What did they do? Let's take a look at some of the articles about fires in the country. These are excerpts from the local newspaper. As Cliff Rye said, "We didn't even have a toothbrush", when they lost everything in the Ozarks and had no insurance.

APRIL 1917
Rosewood News The east bound freight Saturday set fire to a stretch of swamp land east of town and the high wind swept the fire to the north with great velocity. The section crew from Viking and TRF were called and the fire was put under control before much damage was done except the burning of some hay and grass land.
Rosewood News Rasmus Oen was at this place on Tuesday having been called on account of the swamp fire southeast of this place which threatened his property. The fire burned down to the clay.

Three year old was playing with cellophane near the cook stove when it caught on fire causing her to be enveloped in flames. She died at the hospital.

OCTOBER 1929
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Sabo had the misfortune to lose their home by fire Friday morning at 6a.m. Sabo woke up that morning to find the rooms in flames, waking Oscar; they got their two children safety. Oscar went back into the burning house to try and save some of their belongings but found they couldn’t because of flames and then noticing the way out through the door was blocked by fire smashed a bedroom window and got out. Mrs. Sabo then grabbed two quilts through the window which was all they saved except for a few baby clothes that were outside on the clothes line.

JUNE 1931 6 4 Fire at Rye’s destroys barn and kills stock

APRIL 1943 4 15 Mr. And Mrs. Henry Rye were overnight guests at the Lappegaard home Monday following the fire at their home. Miss Ilene Rye stayed at the Lloyd Anderson home.

JUNE 1949 0602 At five o’clock on Saturday evening when Albert Lappegaard was putting fuel into his tractor, the tractor caught on fire and was badly damaged and Mr. Lappegaard was burned quite badly on his legs and arms and is now at the St. Luke’s hospital in Thief River Falls. We hope for his speedy recovery.
According to the Marshall County Banner, the way to get a person over drunkenness is to lock him in a shed and set the shed on fire.

Fire drills at the schools will be held twice a month. At present, it takes students at Knox 32 seconds to clear the building, 40 seconds at Central and less than a minute at Lincoln due to the narrow halls.

Northern Woodwork suffers loss of $10,000 in a fire started by lightening. The building on Knight Avenue near the Great Northern Depot was struck on the southeast corner and followed the wires to the interior.

APRIL 1943
Mr. And Mrs. Henry Rye had the misfortune of having their house burn down Monday afternoon. The origin of the fire is unknown. At present they are living in the house on the Krockstad farm, just north of the Rye Farm

APRIL 1946
04 24 The JA Hellquist family lost their home due to a fire. Family and friends gathered at the Mission Covenant Church and presented them with a money purse.

Although we can speculate what we would save; in an adrenaline rush, we take what is in front of us. What is the entire story about the fire at the Rye farm when the house was burning and the big cook stove was taken out by two men? When Cliff went into his families' burning house and took out the junk drawer instead of the silverware drawer was that adrenaline?

Photographs, an Imprint in History

Sometimes we all wish we could have fancy chairs to put our young children in to take a picture and the perfect back ground. And the perfect outfit with the child preened and pressed. Sometimes. Isn't this a grand picture of Oliver Rye?

What we learn from the background is equally important. My sweet Thomas is so good at recognizing the cars, for example. In the picture of the ladies spinning posted earlier, it was he that recognized they were standing in the snow. If you look at the photograph long enough you learn more than just who is in the picture. We have read that; I think we know that. It is like being a detective! Sometimes when we find a new picture, we are so excited we forget the rules!

As you all know, I have been entrusted to remount pictures which were mounted in 1986. I had always wondered what Olaf Opseth's house looked like. It was across the road from his brother, Gust's house. I knew it had been moved to town during the WWII years and remodeled. In scoping the photographs I found one in the background of a picture of whom I think is Ilene Rye and the Anderson's dog, Sport. It doesn't say that on the back of the picture but the dog is identified in a different picture. In the front of the subject is a road with horse's hoof prints!

We also know that Lloyd and Ella Anderson bought the Gust house and added on to it. I found a picture of the house in the remodeling stage!

I spent time with high school friends recently. We were at the house of one of the mother's. The mother is in an assisted living situation and the daughter had come home to spend time with her mother and while there, went through some pictures. Another member of the coffee clutch was a cousin. After the coffee was all gone and other of us left, the two cousins were looking over photographs. Joy was taking them home to scan them because she didn't have those pictures. History preserved.

Another thing that I noticed was group photographs. Lots and lots of huge groups. Although this is not my preference, with the technology of today, we can enlarge those pictures to find out just was is going on, who is in the photo, and other mysteries not considered on the day it was taken.

There are also mini groups. First child gets solo pictures, second child is photographed with the first, and so on. Many of the pictures Ella Rye Anderson Steinhauer took tell a story. Kudos to her, she has given all of us an opportunity to see facial expressions even if most of the pictures are posed. I am especially please to see a family photo with everyone in it! Again, Kudos to her!

Although we fuss that photos aren't exactly what we hoped; we are grateful for what we have. Again, I say, I would like to jump into the picture and be part of the day. Then, I could share the 'whole ball of wax'.

Now, let me ask you this; what will your photos show the next generation? Without a time stamp will the future generations be able to say, "Oh, that is the orange, avocado, and brown of the seventies." Will they ask what is a shag rug? "Why is grandma wearing those tight pants and high black boots?" "Didn't grandpa ever wear a tie OR why did grandpa always wear a tie?" My own children saw me in a hair piece and wondered when my hair was THAT long. Will they even consider that many of the clothes many have been made? What will they question? Think about it. I am not asking you to write an essay about every picture. After all that would be scrap booking.

But could you and would you, take 25 early pictures of yourself and write 25 words or less? Who, what, where, when, and why? Yes, I know it is a grueling process because you have to go back in your mind, back in that time, and write about it as you remember it. My goal was to write 50 stories about my brother Greg. I did 48. It turned out to be closure for me. Try amazing yourself, you are worth it.

Can one say, "Oh, this is black and white so it must have been taken before...." Think about black and white as a cheaper method of photo processing. The albums contain pictures into the late 60's in black and white. Now we have an option to finish a digital picture that way as well as sepia to make them look old!

And for those of you who wonder how I am doing on the remounting, the pictures are done and a table of Context is made. Although they may be ready to box, another idea came to me. Wouldn't it be fun to have a picture of all the grand children of Lloyd and Ella and try to guess who everyone is? Could you get early pictures of your grand children together?

And as Rachel titled her speech for high school graduation, "Life is Like a Roll of Film".

Joy to all

Corrections

I want to take a minute to thank Shirley for the corrections she sent regarding how names are spelled.

It is her loyality that makes this blog clean. It is an opportunity to get things right so future genealogists don't have to try to figure out just how and why names were spelled differently!

If you are printing the posts, here are the corrections, although All the Lovely Children post has been fixed.

Henry T and Julia O Rye

Julia Olette Olson, (October 24, 1889) was born in Beltrami, Minnesota. Her husband, Henry Tomas Rye, (December 16, 1879), was born in Fertile, Iowa.

Ella submitted information about her parents early life in the New Solum Centennial book. She stated, "They were married on December 9, 1908, and they homesteaded ten miles east of Goodridge, Minnesota. Later, they moved to Granite Falls, Minnesota for a short while, but retuned to the old homestead and lived there until they lost their house in a fire in 1922.

The moved to another farm until 1926. They often drove to Grygla, nine miles from their place, whith horse and buggy. There was a doctor and a hospital there; the doctor served as a dentist.

They often spoke of the fourth of July celebrations that were held at that time. Horse pulling contests and races of various kinds were held for the children".

We know from documents that Henry registered for the draft in 1918. Imagine the thought of him going to the war as a 39 year old with five children! The document is signed by him. I will try to enlarge it for all of us to see. It states he was short, meduim build, with blue eyes and light brown hair. It states he has weak eyes.

1880 census of Fertile Township, Worth County, Iowa, he is listed as Thomas, a one year old.

1900 census Julia is listed as the daughter of Ole K and Gertrude Olson. Julia was a nine year old. They were living in Scandia Township, Polk County, Minnesota.

1910 census lists Henry, Julia, Oliver and Nelsk, Eliza, Melvin, Clarence, Nueman, and Hazel all living in Granite Falls Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota. Oliver, their first child was born in 1909.

1920 census Henry, Julia, Oliver, Hilda, Alice, Ella, and Nora were living in Reiner Township, Pennington County, Minnesota. It states all of the above mentioned children were born in Minnesota.

1930census the family was living in Latona Township, Walsh County, North Dakota. Murvin, Clifford, Ilene, and Ralph had been added since the last census. Ralph is the only child to have been born in North Dakota; he was born in 1929.

It is indeed true that Henry Rye did homestead in section 24 of township 154N, range 39. This land was in Pennington County. He also had land in sections 13 and 14; forty acres in each. All of the land was in Reiner Township.

First issue date:
9/19/1910
He had to apply for a claim

Pay fees

Live on the land five years

Prove he was naturalized citizen

Have witnesses stating he was upstanding AND proved up the land

Then he was issued a land patent for

SWSW OF SECTION 13 (40 acres)

SESE OF SECTION 14 (40 acres)

NWNW OF SECTION 24 (40 acres)

Then! Henry got another claim in 1915 on

SWNW SECTION OF 24 (40 acres)

It is not known if he was just really smart picking up his 160 acres in part to get the best available, or if that is the only land that was left. It is said some homesteaders were in Crookston getting land in the winter off a map and didn't have a clue as to what they were really getting. When Ella talked about her folks being burned out in 1922 and moving, it may have been to a different section. That is, if the house burned on section 13, they may have moved to 14 or to 24.

Doesn't it seem to you like, if he started working the first claim in 1905 that he must have met Julia in that area? If the Olson's lived close to the Torgerson Post Office, then Henry would have been about two or so miles from the Olson farm. Shirley stated that when the Gilsoul, Olson, Larson murder occurred, Henry went there by horseback.

Nine children were born to Julia and Henry:

Oliver; 1909

Hilda; 1911

Alice; 1912

Ella; 1915

Nora; 1918

Murvin; 1921

Clifford; 1923

Ilene ; 1926

Ralph; 1929

The family moved to New Solum Township in 1931. The farm was located in section 28. They moved to this area in 1931.

It Happened in July

Let's take a look at the days of July and share the dates. We will see this sort of lay out on the first of every month. I will use two children for the Relationship calculator. I have chosen Kelsie, daughter of Vincent, who is the son of Shirley, who is the daughter of Lloyd, who is a son of Nina, who is a daughter of Thorinus Mellem. On the Rye side, Kelsie is, of course, daughter of Shirley, who is the daughter of Ella, who is the daughter of Henry Thomas Rye. I have chosen Kelsie because of her interest in her family history.

On the other side of the family, I have chosen Jaeme Lynn Thomae, daughter of Rachel Anderson, who's mother is Elodee and who's father is Robert D. Anderson, son of Lloyd Anderson who's mother is Nina Mellem and who's family is Rev. Olaf Anderson. Other ancestors on that side of the family are Rye and Olson.

Jaeme also has Ranum, Opseth, Lundberg, Jensen.
