Old Trunks wonders just what the occasion was on this day. There are several pictures taken at the same time. Is it possible this was a birthday celebration for Thorinus? Can trees still have leaves in October?

Richard was born in June, he had a big party on his birthday in 1946; his brother, Robert had a party when he turned five. We know that from reading old newspapers. Yet, why would kids be dressed so warmly June or August? Perhaps we can't find the answers. Perhaps we have to say how wonderful it is to see another four generation picture, taken, perhaps at random. We do know from viewing the other pictures that one of pictures is taken with Sylvia, Thornius' grand daughter and Carl's daughter. The pictures appear to be taken at the Mellem house.

Let's post all the pictures taken that day on a post script blog. It will give you an opportunity to look at back grounds and come to your own conclusions.

A Catch UP Page

As you remember, we posted a picture of Brenda bottle feeding a raccoon the end of October. This is her sister, Juanita, bottle feeding a rabbit. Old Trunks found this picture in the grandmother's stock. When you see the picture, don't you just think the girls are both animal lovers? Isn't the picture Juanita bottle feeding a baby rabbit? We have since learned the entire story. This is the story of how the baby rabbit came to be bottle fed. It teaches us the true story isn't always what is in the picture. It is like my sweet Thomas having his wife, Pat, hold his fish for photos! (Pat died of cancer).

Shirley writes:

"Brenda isn't the only animal lover..this is a baby rabbit that Vince picked up in a field that he was cultivating a firebreak in in about 1990. We thought the whole farm was gonna go that time. A fire in the Lake Agassiz (sp) Refuge. which is 1/4 mile behind our house. The baby fit in his closed fist when he brought it home to me. The fire was sooo bad coming across the refuge..I got all the pix and stuff that seemed important at the time in the car..I was home alone and we had fire trucks from Grygla, Goodridge, Middle River in our yard ready to attempt to save our farm. Needless to say, it was saved.
We had this baby bunnie until it was QUITE large. in our house as an orphan..it finally got big enough to fend for itself and it finally took off to find a mate!"

Shirley called to say that the bunny was rescued in early April. By the time Vince's graduation in late May, the bunny chewed off Shirley's hair while she was taking a nap on the sofa. She states she had a bald spot on her head the night of his graduation although she did not wear a barrett to cover it up!


On another topic....It is not certain just what year Nora and Louis bought the hotel in Spokane, however, Judy remembers being there when she was six years old. "I will try to ask Mom about Nora and Louie's Union Hotel. The Anderson kids got a real look at life at that hotel ... drunks coming and going, things going on we had never seen before except for **when he used to come to Rosewood!" That would be about 1950.

All the pictures taken from the trunk in the garage at Steinhauer's have been sorted and cataloged. All the pictures of each of the children have been sent to the parties of which they are the central subject. Each person has been assigned a number. It is chronologically done. Nels and Elissa are 1, Henry T and Julia O are 2 and so forth; the catalog finishes with 52, Thomas Henry Rye. Additional sub groups are Early Rosewood, and Miscellaneous. Each group has been run as a print sheet, which allows Old Trunks to look through the pictures and find all the four generation pictures and take time to fix the pictures, as many of them are still too dark to view as a slide show on the disk which will be made. It is easy to find the four generation pictures when you have everything in order!

It is time to remind the readers of this blog that these pictures, with the exception of "What we look like now" are all pictures taken from the Steinhauer house in October. It is equally important to note that this is only the Nels and Eliza Rye line. In a date not yet set, another CD will be prepared for the Mellem/Anderson/Bloom line. And for those of you who represent Lundberg/Ranum side, that will be done as well.

Some of the Henry T. and Julia Rye children do not have ancestors. Those pictures are being put together in an album. The album will be presented to Shirley Hagen. Shirley has four albums previously done; first in 1986 and again in the summer of 2007. The only group of pictures that will not be sent to Shirley are the early pictures of Lloyd and Ella. Lisa has those, as she had started a marvelous scrap book like album on Ella's birthday.

It is unfortunate there are no individual pictures from the collection of Alice or Murvin. They are, however, represented in group Henry T. Rye portraits. In the beginning the idea was to crop them out of the pictures so that group had a representative picture; that idea has changed, we will have empty categories.

We will share all the four generation pictures available then start a run of group pictures of Henry and Julia followed by Lloyd and Ella. This will get Murvin and Alice into the loop.

Louis Cloutier October 27, 1912-May 05, 2002

In the beginning of reading newspapers, Old Trunks was confused. It seems that one of the OTHER Rye families had a daughter named Nora too. There is information stating the OTHER Nora had a hotel in Rosewood.





The Nora we are talking about today is Nora, the fifth child of Henry T. and Julia O. Rye. Her sister, Ella, states that her sister had their father "wrapped around her little finger". Although there are stories about how poor the two of them were when they were first married, they appeared to find a vocation suitable to take care of their needs and others, as well.

3 19 Clifford Rye returned home Monday after having spent sometime at Perham at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Cloutier. Mr. And Mrs. Cloutier sold out their business there and left for Toledo, Ohio where Mr. Cloutier is now attending the National Meat Cutting School.





OCTOBER 1943
10 7 Louis T Cloutier SC2C of Farrragut, Idaho and Mrs. Louis Cloutier of Coeur de Alene, Idaho arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rye, parents of Mrs. Cloutier Monday. They plan to spend a few days visiting relatives before returning to Perham from there they will leave for the USNTS in Farragut, Idaho.





November 1944
Mrs. Louis Cloutier of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho arrived at her parental home, Mr. and Mrs. H Rye Sunday morning where she visited until Thursday

Mrs. Lloyd Anderson, Mrs. Louis Cloutier, S/Sgt. Clifford Rye, Ilene Rye, Oliver and Ralph Rye were callers at Thief River Falls on Monday afternoon





APRIL 1945
04 19 Mr. and Mrs. Louis Cloutier left Wednesday night for Bradford, Virginia where Mr. Cloutier will be stationed in the navy. Mr. Cloutier has spent about a year overseas. He was with in the invasion of D Day





September 1945
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Cloutier are expected to arrive at the H Rye home the first of the week from Norfolk, VA. Mr. Cloutier has received his honorable discharge from the Navy. He served in the Navy for 31 months.





JUNE 1947
06 19 Louis Cloutier of Spokane, Washington is spending a few days visiting





NOVEMBER 1947
11 06 Mrs. Louis Cloutier of Garfield, WA and Mrs. Henry Rye spent a few days visiting at International Falls where they visited Clifford Rye and Family and also Ole Rye and Family.





It is not known just when Nora and Louis bought the hotel in Spokane. There are pictures of the Anderson family standing in front of it. It is understood the family went by train to visit them on a regular basis. Let's ask Ella via Judy if she knows!

Dorothy is the oldest child of Ella and Lloyd Anderson. She moved to Kansas to attend the university and live with her aunt and uncle. She met and married Larry G. Schneider.

The picture is of their youngest child, Lynelle who is holding her son, Matthew. When sifting through old pictures, Old Trunks found a birth announcement for Matthew. Lynelle tells her grandmother they wonder if Matthew would have red hair. Look again at how the sun light enhances Lynelle's beautiful hair!

For the most part, the Schneider children grew up on a farmette near Hillsdale, Kansas. The picture is taken on the deck at their house. Lynelle's cousin, Rachel Anderson liked to go there and play with the kittens. One year, on Rachel's birthday, that is what she wanted to do; Lynelle was that important to her.

Lynelle and her husband, Mike have two children. Matthew, pictured and Marissa who attends elementary school in Hillsdale.

Marissa's grand mother, Dorothy, goes to school on a weekly basis and reads to the children. We can't help but wonder if Dorothy's mother, Ella did the same thing at Rosebank School in Rosewood, Minnesota.

Law Enforcement

We all know the idea of enforcing the law has been around for a long time. We know that when the brutal murders happened to the Olson family in 1914, Sheriff LaBree was called in because the murderer was just inside the Pennington County line. If you wish to read about the episode, refer to June 14 of Old Trunks & Worn Shoes.

We know that in 1925, the Bloom family took someone in that had robbed stores. "Rosewood News The arrest of Carl A Sather, a familiar character at Rosewood since the beginning of December, at Thief River Falls last Saturday caused quite a stir in local circles. Sather arrived here about December first, from North Dakota claiming an earlier intimate acquaintance with Newell Anderson from Fordville where both have been employed this summer and proceeded to make his home at the home of Newell’s step father, Mr. Carl Bloom and stayed there intermittent until taken by the sheriff. Sather left about December 10 for Minneapolis and returned about the 18th, driving a Dodge automobile and an unusually large supply of wearing apparel, fur coats, merchandise and rings and jewelry. This was after his operations at Gonvick. This large and varied collection appeared somewhat mysterious to some and some of the neighbors at the time cautioned the Blooms of foul play. Sather showed a very generous and help some disposition and was engaged as a church assistant for the Christmas program held at the Swedish Mission church on the evening of December 30th at which time he played a very prominent public part here. Sather made a good many friends with the local business men and evidently secured a thorough inside knowledge of the many places now strongly suspicion as forethought should be later plan a roundup of this place. There is no suspicion of any thefts here, as this was his hibernation for the time and he could find no better place of seclusion that the Bloom farm which is located at a considerable distance away from the highway and if he had kept shy of the highways and towns he would evidently have eluded suspicion even after his Alvarado burglary. Considerable of the stolen loot was confiscated at the Bloom farm on January 12. When Hans Hanson, Marshall County Sheriff, personally raided the place, locating articles both in and the home and hidden in out buildings. At a hearing before Judge Andrew Grindeland Friday, Sather pleaded guilty to a series of thefts and was sentenced to serve an indeterminate sentence of from one to ten years in Stillwater."

Those of us who lived in Thief River Falls always read the police news in the local paper. There may have been a lot of robberies and people picked up for drinking and driving, however, I only remember one shooting. Bud Meyers was on duty the night he and his partner pursued a teenager beyond the outer limits of town. Bud was shot on that cold winter night. It was a terrible loss for his family, friends, and people of the city of Thief River Falls.

It makes you wonder how many law enforcement people a city has. Is it based on population? How many calls do they make in a 24 hour period? What kind of calls do they make? Does your paper have a daily crime watch section in the paper?

Our city has a crime watch bulletin board. In the last 24 hours there have been about 250 calls investigated. There are loud parties, cats and dogs being picked up, accidents, medical assistance calls, domestic disturbances, and a garden variety of other law enforcement calls.
