The Anniversary of Lloyd and Ella Anderson

Lloyd and Ella (Rye) Anderson
This article appeared in the New Solum Celebration book. It was written and submitted by Ella Rye Anderson in 1975.

Lloyd ana Ella Anderson started out their married life in March, 1934, in the Rosewood community. Years earlier Rosewood was known as Strip, Minnesota (the joke about that was as the conductor would go down the aisle of the train and call "Strip" — people took it literally and would start stripping ), and so it was decided to change the name to Rosewood because of so many wild roses.

Lloyd and Ella farmed for a while west of Rosewood on the Carl Bloom farm and later bought a house in Rosewood from Gust Opseth in Section 3 of Strip.
In 1942 , Lloyd went to work for the Soo Line Railroad, which position he held until his death in 1967. At that time he was foreman on the section in Thief River Falls. He had been section foreman since 1949. He had worked as foreman on jobs in Newfolden and as assistant foreman in Warren.

We bought 120 acres in Section 33, New Solum Township and farmed it. In those days we had to have our own cows for milk and meat so we put up hay and raised our own grain on the farm, doing it in the evenings, as to begin with, Lloyd worked six days a week for the railroad.
In our earlier days we kept a record of income and expenses. When the children grew older they would enjoy going back to those record books and laugh over the prices. And now in 1975 there sure would be a "great" difference. The one item that stands out was when we lived on the farm and needed a "hay rope" old timers would know what a long length that would be and it cost six dollars and twenty cents. Wonder how many feet it would buy now!

In our house at Rosewood the basement was made of split rock and it had carvings on them which are still there. It had been built by Gust Opseth. He was a well known stone cutter. Some of his work is at the Park area, which is just across from the Pioneer Village in Thief River Falls. Minnesota.
