ROSETTES

Rosettes aare a Norwegian pastry/dessert made with a decorative iron where the 'iron' is dipped into the batter then into hot grease and deep fried. It is another food which is sprinkled with sugar. MORE WHITE FOOD!!!

This is one pastry that requires a special tool. The ingredients are simple: Eggs, sugar, salt, milk, and flour. Beat the eggs, add the rest of the ingredients, Beat until smooth. Just be certain your iron is seasoned or everything will stick!

I love rosettes. I Like the way they crunch and fall apart in your lap when you eat them! When grandma made them it was done in a triangle shaped pot. I suspect she used that to cut back on the amount of lard she needed to use to cook them. Yes, I said lard. Now I suppose one would fry them in a good grade oil.

Isn’t it amazing how many of these old recipes are only available during the holiday season? Was it because of the storage, that is keeping them frozen or where they such a holiday tradition? I wonder if the status of your household was based on the numbr of holiday treats were offered when company came.

I did not know until I started working on this project that rosette iron’s came in anything but a rose shape and a star. Take a minute to look at all the different designs that are available now! Years even Halloween, Easter, why there is even a fish! Do you think that’s for the walleye opener Saturday before Mother’s Day in Minnesota?

In the winter of 1982, Rachel her and her friends decided to have a special dinner once a month. The girls would each selected country, find the recipes, give a recipe to each one of the girls to prepare, and host a party. Rachel’s party was Norwegian. The party was held in January 23, 1982. We made the potato dumplings. Melinda and Bridget made rosettes. Bridget’s mother, Mrs. Patti, was not pleased with the mess of making this fine dessert. Jennifer made the cranberry cocktail. Alison Marquis brought a cottage cheese salad. Did Allyson Downs bring an apple dessert? What did the little smart blonde bring, what was her name? Finney? Roselyn? Did I miss anyone?

I bought rosettes before Christmas and froze them. ALAS! This old elf forgot to take them out of the freezer! Come on over and have some with coffee!
